FAQ

FAQ's

Galvanised steel uses a pure zinc coating that provides corrosion protection primarily through sacrificial galvanic action the zinc corrodes preferentially to protect the steel beneath. Galvalume uses a 55% aluminium – 43.4% zinc – 1.6% silicon alloy coating. The aluminium component forms a dense, adherent aluminium oxide layer on the coating surface that acts as a highly effective barrier against corrosive attack significantly slowing the rate at which the coating is consumed by corrosion. The zinc component provides sacrificial galvanic protection at cut edges and damaged areas. The combined result is a coating that provides two to four times the corrosion life of an equivalent zinc coating weight in most atmospheric exposure environments and in aggressive coastal, industrial, and high-humidity conditions, the performance advantage is typically at the higher end of this range or beyond.

Bare galvalume sheets are available in AZ100 (100 g/m² total two-side coating weight), AZ150 (150 g/m²), and AZ185 (185 g/m²) with higher coating weights providing proportionally longer corrosion protection life in a given environment. The correct coating weight is selected based on the project's corrosion category (C1–C5 per ISO 9223), the design life requirement, and the proximity to corrosion-accelerating factors. As a general guide: AZ100 is suitable for standard inland industrial and commercial environments with moderate design life requirements; AZ150 is specified for coastal environments (within 10–15km of the sea), high-humidity industrial zones, and agricultural applications where an extended corrosion protection life is required; AZ185 is used for the most demanding coastal and industrial corrosion environments or where the maximum available coating protection life is required for the project specification.

No bare galvalume does not require painting, priming, or any factory or site-applied surface treatment. The metallic alloy coating is the complete corrosion protection system. On initial installation, the surface has a bright silver-grey metallic appearance. Over time with outdoor exposure, the surface weathers to a stable, uniform mid-grey patina a normal characteristic of the aluminium oxide weathering process after which the surface condition remains stable and continues to protect the steel substrate beneath for the coating's full service life. Routine maintenance consists of periodic cleaning to remove atmospheric deposits, biological growth, and industrial contamination that can trap moisture or accelerate localised surface staining. No repainting, coating inspection, or surface treatment programme is required at any point in the building's service life.

Yes bare galvalume has several important material compatibility requirements that must be managed in installation. Contact with dissimilar metals (particularly copper and its alloys) must be avoided copper run-off from rooftop copper components or copper plumbing overflows will accelerate galvalume corrosion at the contact zone through a galvanic cell reaction. Contact with wet concrete, mortar, or lime-based materials must also be avoided alkaline run-off attacks the aluminium component of the galvalume coating. Fasteners must be compatible stainless steel, aluminium, or galvalume-coated fasteners are specified; carbon steel fasteners corrode and stain the sheet surface. These compatibility requirements are standard for galvalume installations and are covered in our technical installation guidance supplied with every order.

Yes bare galvalume coil is routinely roll-formed into trapezoidal, corrugated, standing rib, and other standard roofing and cladding profiles by profiling mills. The galvalume coating maintains its adhesion and integrity through the roll-forming process provided that the bend radius-to-thickness ratio is within the specified limits for the coating weight and steel grade which standard roofing profiles are designed to meet. For projects where profiled galvalume sheeting is required, coil can be supplied to a profiling mill for roll-forming to your specified profile, or pre-profiled cut-to-length sheets can be supplied directly if roll-forming services are part of our project scope for your order.
