Z & C Purlin Technical Specifications.

Alfa Z and C purlins are precision-formed secondary steel members used in pre-engineered buildings, industrial sheds, warehouses, factories, and roofing structures. The technical table below includes purlin depth, thickness, mass, flange, and lip details to help engineers select the right purlin profile based on span, load, and project requirements.

FAQ's

The difference is the cross-section. A C purlin is a plain channel with both return lips on the same side a symmetrical single-span section. A Z purlin carries its lips on opposite flanges, giving an offset Z shape. That geometry lets two Z sections nest and overlap at the supports, which a C section cannot do. Both are cold-formed from the same high-tensile galvanized steel; the shape decides how the section behaves under load.

Because the Z shape is offset, two purlins can overlap and bolt together at the support, where bending forces are highest. This lapped zone effectively doubles the section over the support, raising its moment capacity exactly where it's needed. The result is a continuous, stiffer member across multiple spans with less deflection something a plain C section can't achieve. C sections are used for single spans and end positions where lapping isn't possible.

Alfa Z & C purlins are roll-formed from high-tensile pre-galvanized steel coil. High-tensile grade gives predictable yield strength and load capacity, while the galvanized coating builds corrosion protection into the steel itself rather than adding it afterward.

Z & C purlins are available in a range of section depths (typically ~100–300 mm) and thicknesses (typically 1.2–3.2 mm). The correct depth and gauge are matched to the required span, load and stiffness.

Yes. They are formed from pre-galvanized coil, so the zinc coating is part of the material and protects the full formed section, including the edges and lips. Coating class (GSM) can be selected to suit the environment.

Yes. Every purlin is supplied cropped to exact length and pre-punched to the required hole pattern, so sections arrive as a finished, ready-to-fix member — no site cutting or drilling.

Selection depends on the span between supports, the load, and whether a continuous (lapped Z) or single-span (C) member is required. Deeper sections and heavier gauges carry more load over longer spans. Share your span and loading and our team will confirm the correct section.

Tight roll-forming tolerances hold the depth, flanges and lips consistent along the full length, producing straight, true sections free of twist and camber — so they align and bolt up accurately, length after length.

Price depends on the section (Z or C), depth, thickness, coating class, length and quantity, and moves with steel coil rates. Send your specification for a current, itemised quotation.
